Reporter:
This is Susan Wright reporting live from Moreno Valley, California, where we’re talking to local probate attorney Steve Bliss about estate planning. Steve, thank you for joining us.
Steve Bliss:
It’s my pleasure to be here, Susan. Estate planning is crucial, and I want to make sure people in our community have the information they need.
Susan Wright:
Absolutely. Now, Steve, there are many different types of trusts available. Can you tell us about one that you often recommend to your clients?
Steve Bliss:
Certainly. One type of trust I frequently discuss with my clients is the Revocable Living Trust. It’s a powerful tool for estate planning because it offers flexibility and control.
Ordinarily, people think of wills when they consider what happens to their assets after they pass away. While a will is important, it goes through probate, which can be a lengthy and public process. A Revocable Living Trust avoids probate altogether. This means your assets are distributed to your beneficiaries more quickly and privately.
Moreover, with a revocable living trust, you, as the grantor, maintain complete control over the assets during your lifetime. You can modify or revoke the trust if your circumstances change. Consequently, it’s a great option for individuals who want to ensure their wishes are carried out while retaining flexibility.
A common misconception is that trusts are only for wealthy individuals. However, anyone with assets they want to protect and distribute according to their wishes can benefit from a revocable living trust. In fact, a study by the AARP found that over 60% of Americans aged 55 and older do not have a will or trust in place.
I’ve had clients express concern about losing control over their assets if they create a trust. Let me assure you, that’s not the case with a revocable living trust. You remain in full control until your passing. When I worked with the Smith family, they were initially hesitant to set up a trust because they thought it would be too complicated. After explaining the benefits and walking them through the process step by step, they felt much more comfortable and ultimately decided it was the best decision for their family.
Susan Wright:
That’s reassuring to hear. Steve, thank you for shedding light on this important topic. How can our viewers get in touch with you?
